Hi !
Being the last week in January, it looks like those of us working with privacy wonât exactly be getting a quieter 2026. For us in SkoleSec and the national DPIA projects, there are several things we need to deliver this year.
So letâs use this newsletter to talk a bit about our plans.
To summarise, the two national DPIA projects we are working on are: one on the use of Microsoft 365 in schools, and an update of the DPIA of Google Workspace for Education.
Updating the DPIA for Google Workspace for Education due to generative AI
We published the first version of this DPIA in December 2024. You can read it here:
https://www.ks.no/fagomrader/digitalisering/skolesec/nasjonal-dpia-for-google/ny-nasjonal-personvernkonsekvensvurdering-for-bruk-av-google-workspace-for-education-i-skolen/
Since that work was completed, several major changes have taken place in Google Workspace for Education. The biggest one? Generative AI is now part of the core services.
What needs to be done?
- We will update the processing record for Google Workspace for Education.
- We will update the privacy impact assessments (risk scenarios).
-
We will update the descriptions of the services we assess and determine whether the introduction of services with generative AI changes the division of responsibilities between school owners and Google. That is, whether this means Google is the controller for MORE than was previously the case.
We are already well underway with this work, and we are working differently than we did last time. Since this is an update, we in SkoleSec are responsible for the actual writing.
We also meet once a week together with staff from several school owners who use Google Workspace for Education to discuss.
We believe this is the most effective way to work on this update. Our goal is to be able to publish as quickly as possible.
When will it be published? Sometime in 2026, but as the project lead, I have an ambition to finish well before that. Follow me here in the newsletter, because this is where we will announce it first.
DPIA of the use of Microsoft 365 in schools
Work on the DPIA of Microsoft 365 will continue through 2026. The plan is for the entire DPIA to be completed and ready for publication in December 2026, or in the first half of 2027.
And after that? We also have an ambition to look at Appleâs products in Norwegian schools.
One of the principles we work by is that we publish things as soon as we finish them.
There are several reasons for this, including that we want to test our conclusions and recommendations along the way. Because if we produce something that isnât actually useful for school owners, we want you to tell us so we can create something that has more value.
Another reason is that we know many school owners have made an active choice to postpone their DPIAs until we are finished with this one. When we complete a piece, those of you in that situation can start the work youâve been putting off.
What Iâm trying to say is: you can expect to see more publications from us in 2026 than we managed in 2025!
Get excited! Weâre really excited too!
I wish you a wonderful, privacy-friendly week-end!
Best regards,
Ida Thorsrud
